I despair at the Media in Ireland

Today the 10th June 2008 has been noted as the day that 48,000 people signed on the dole. That’s the highest for any year since these records began according to the media.

• Concern at record rise in Live Register
(19:34) Employers' body IBEC and the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed have expressed concern at the record rise in the Live Register revealed today.

Fisherman are blockading Cork harbour trying to protect their jobs.

• Fishermen blockade Cork, Waterford ports
(19:36) Fishermen blockading Cork and Waterford's ports have made a number of demands, which they say will end their protest.

Taxi operators are up in arms over the taxi regulators refusal to talk to them about their concerns over their jobs.

• FG wants Lisbon taxi bumper sticker ban
(17:41) Fine Gael wants to ban taxis from displaying bumper stickers that proclaim which way the vehicle's driver intends to vote on Lisbon.

It’s the last day for the media to discuss the Lisbon Treaty.

And there’s more where that came from.

What I want to say about this is the media in general seems to have pulled out all the stops to give the Yes to the Lisbon Treaty a massive push in light of the published gains for the No camp in the Irish Times poll. Every radio and TV presenter has now exhausted this topic to the point where it’s driving everybody insane. RTE in particular has shown itself to be totally behind the establishment pushing for a Yes vote although, they will say they presented a balanced view, with an equal amount of Yes and No voices. Maybe they did, but they had another choice and it’s this. They could have ignored it and tackled the real current and more immediate unemployment crisis that is facing this country. However it seems they won’t do that for fear of annoying their boss, the minister for communications, the person who grants them their annual licence fee increase.

Anybody that knows me will testify to my absolute despair at the Irish media in particular RTE and those that either want to work there or those who are friends with the organisation.

I got another dose of reality this morning when I heard Ray Darcy on TodayFM interviewing a woman that is taking part in a show that is airing on RTE tonight. This lady was informative and witty, and entertaining so as not take anything away from her, in fact she was great listening. My real problem is this: Why did Ray Darcy and TodayFM not find something other than its rivals show to talk about. Considering the small number of serious topics I’ve outlined above, and the TodayFM organisation could only talk about it’s competitors show. What other sector of industry would be seen promoting the competition? Now there’s a mixed bunch of media types for you.
